This story is an exploration of why and how Beyond Birthday went crazy, looking into his character before we meet him in Nisio Isin's light novel 'Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases'.
This is written with many flashbacks and memories of L's and BB's lives, including, and not limited to A's fate, L's pre-Wammy childhood, Beyond Birthday's origins, etc.
This might start nice and slow, with a long build-up, but there is going to be graphic violence (blood is mentioned a lot) and uhm... stuff ahead. -

L wins AU! in which Light has been in jail for two years when L shows up asking for his help with a case. Light desperately wants to help, he missed their competition and has been very bored without it but he feels that L is hiding something. Still, Light helps hesitantly, all the while trying to figure out what game the detective is playing at. Meanwhile, L is willing to play at any game, as long as Light plays with him.

Summary
One year after the end of Miraculous Death Note, L and Light start their race to see who can catch Hawk Moth first...only to find themselves bitterly disappointed when the case is solved in twenty minutes tops. They also don't approve of L's stalker successor with a hero-complex. And there's the little detail that nobody in France seems to acknowledge the existence of security cameras.
But when they learn Light's successor, Adrien, is abused by his father, belittled by his partner, and forced to hide who he really is, Light and L both decide getting involved in this insanity wasn't a complete waste of time.
Things once again become interesting with the return of Kira, but it's not Light. Not long after, the revived monks of the guardian temple prove themselves to be a nuisance, and Adrien makes a dangerous decision, needing to live with the consequences and the continuing battle between doing what must be done and his own morals.
